Very large (36" by 23 1/2", 45" by 33" framed), decorative, attention-getting squarely Mid Century oil on canvas of two "Big Eye" children, painted in his usual whimsical fashion, by the French mid century impressionist artist ROGER ETIENNE (1922-2011). The painting is signed at lower left by the artist and dated there 1973. This is one of the largest works I have seen by this French artist, and it (including all framing) is in amazing, near-mint condition; hard to believe it is nearly a half century old. Etienne is known for mid century drawings of young nudes and clowns, and big eyed children, with French newspaper often incorporated into the image, collage style. Etienne was a prolific artist who spent his later years in Los Angeles and Southern California, which is why many examples appear here. He is said to have worked for four years in the Picasso Workshop, and is credited by some with having worked under Marc Chagall, on the Paris Opera House project. It appears that the artist is often confused by collector, dealer and auction house alike with the French painter Etienne Ret (1900-1996), some of whose works bear some resemblance to those of Roger Etienne. See another work by the artist in my shop, perhaps, one of his very best.
