For the collector of classic California Plein Air art, an oil on canvas work, "Laguna Waves", 20" by 24" (27 1/2" by 31 1/2" in quality reproduction gold frame), signed at lower right by well listed and often-auctioned CHRISTIAN VON SCHNEIDAU (1893-1976). The painting features true impressionist brush strokes and colors, enhanced by a recent professional cleaning which really revealed those beautiful strokes and colors. Von Schneidau was born in Sweden of noble birth. He attended the Stockholm Academy of Fine Art. By 1906 we see him in America (and until 1921 in Minnesota). Von Schneidau received instruction from many important and talented artists, including, at the Art Institute of Chicago, Charles Reynolds and Karl Buehr. He also spent time at the Provincetown art colony on Cape Cod, with instruction there from the likes of Charles Webster Hawthorne and Richard Emil Miller. By 1917 Von Schneidau was in Los Angeles, where he operated the Von Schneidau School of Fine Arts. The artist became involved with the Los Angeles and Hollywood elite, painting their elegant impressionistic portraits in the elaborate settings. Later he was active in the California Art Club. Von Schneidau's paintings have approached $20,000 at auctions of California impressionist art. CONDITION: There is a skillful old repair at bottom, marked by a patch, and three small punctures/tears were recently professionally attended to with see-through patches expertly applied. The painting is ready for the wall.
