Watercolor on paper drawing of a young man reading a newspaper, 11 1/2" by 15 1/4", unframed with old mat still attached, signed at lower right "B. Singer". This is a work of the noted California painter BURR SINGER (1912-1992). Singer is an important California woman artist, fine oil works bringing to the upper four figures at recent auctions. Born in St. Louis, she exhibited around the country at the 1939 World's Fair in San Francisco, after studying at the Art Students League in New York and the Art Institute in Chicago. She painted for a time in the Taos, New Mexico art colony, a student of Walter Ufer. This example shows her skill in watercolor and draftsmanship---the arms, hands and facial profile so beautifully drawn. Condition is excellent; the work is taped lightly at top edge to the backing. See the net for much more on Singer and her works.
