A fine watercolor painting of coastal waves and rocks, 9 1/2" by 13 1/4" (15" by 19" framed), signed at lower right by listed California artist GLADYS DAY and titled in old ink on the backing "Rocks at La Jolla Calif./by Gladys Day/Del Mar Ave/Chula Vista". Written again on the backing by a previous owner: "For Peggy S. Block/Wind and Sea in winter/with the sand washed out/See the old kelp cutter in the hazy distance?/With love, Mom/Berrell E. Pronold". Born in England, Gladys Day created art at an early age. In 1920, she and her husband moved to Chula Vista near San Diego. She took Alfred Mitchell's outdoor art class in 1929 and began painting local houses and gardens in watercolor, selling the pictures to help support her family of five during the Depression. She painted many picturesque Coronado scenes, which she sold from 1934 on for 25 cents. She was still painting at 83, when a Bridge and Bay reporter interviewed her. A little research would help determine her birth/death dates but a guess of about 1890-1975 might not be a bad guess. The watercolor is in excellent condition, the colors not faded. A fine and desirable earlier work featuring the San Diego area. Allow for a few reflections in several photos (whitish areas especially near top of images). ADDENDUM: I have recently been contacted by a relative of the artist, who informed me that Gladys Day was born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England on September 2, 1890. Her full name was Rosabella Ida Gladys Orton. She married one Arthur Day February 10, 1920, in Warwick, Warwickshire, England, and passed away January 3, 1979 in San Diego, California, USA.
