An original drawing of a standing cowboy, executed on thin tracing-style paper, with estate stamp at lower right of noted Arizona artist CURTIS WINGATE (1926-1982). The drawing, 18" by 9" inside the current mat, is very sketchy, as if perhaps a very preliminary study for a finished watercolor or painting. Wingate was born in Dennison, Texas and spent most of his life in Arizona after moving there from California. He was a traditional western painter, who studied with William Schimmel and was encouraged by John Wade Hampton and George Phippen. Wingate was an associate member of the Cowboy Artists of America. As he died at only age 56, his works appear to be scarce. There is another sketch of a cowboy on the left side of the paper, beyond the mat (see photos). The paper is quite rippled and wrinkled, as might be expected with a sketch on thin paper. Sketch or not, this is a work of western American art, complete in and of itself.
