Etching on thin laid paper, 3 3/4" by 2 3/4" (14" by 11" in modern day frame), from the series "Beggars and other low life", by the noted early Dutch artist JAN GILLISZ VAN VLIET (1605-1668). The etching is one image out of a series of ten or eleven similar views by the artist, who, despite information to the contrary, was not strictly a pupil/student of Rembrandt. It is said that he was working as an independent etcher with Rembrandt, collaborating with the latter on translating paintings to the etching medium, and making prints after Rembrandt's drawings. Van Vliet's views of cripples and rough edged characters of Dutch society of the 1600's were popular imagery. This I believe is an original 17th century print (there was a later printing well after the artist's death, in 1816). The paper is very thin. As can be seen in the images it has oxidized unevenly. Where there are apparent hinges at top corners, the color is lighter. There is a small edge loss at lower left side. The work has been nicely framed with silk covered board in a niche of sorts. Ready for display. A truly antique print for the traditional interior.
