A well-painted work featuring an interior, perhaps a residence, perhaps a restaurant or other public space, a table with fruit in a bowl, a chair, and sofa filling the space. The oil on canvas, 17 1/2" by 21" (20 1/2" by 24" in old frame, likely the original), is signed somewhat indecipherably at lower left and dated there "Berlin 1909". The name appears at first glance to be "B. Geis(xxxx)" or "B. Geism(xxxx)". Surprisingly, given the inherent quality of the painting, I do not see a listed name that would correspond to this; although, this could be by BEPPO (Joseph) STEINMETZ (1872-1933), the work of whom bears certain similarities, and what looks like a "G" in the signature could in fact be a closely packed "St", upon close examination. The painting has areas of unstable paint, especially in the left portion of the table and table legs, but also in the chair and several other spots. A restorer could correct this while cleaning and varnishing the work. The frame has a number of losses. A quality painting dating to an interesting and important period in modern German art.
