Oil on canvasboard, circa 1950's painting of bison in a landscape of desert mountains and scrub, 15 3/4" by 20", unframed, signed at lower left by listed California artist HARVEY W. BURNS (1902-1991). Burns' wife, in 2006, submitted to AskArt the following biographical information on her late husband:
"He studied with Pierre Rochard, graduate of Ecole Des Beaux Arts in Paris; he was very versatile; at age 17, he was hired to provide art posters for Hollywood movie studios; painted many movie stars portraits for lobbies "Coming Attraction" posters; sold paintings to California government offices; taught in Texas for a franchise movie distributor; sold paintings to movie set designers suitable for the theme of the movie; painted landscapes, portraits, animals, seascapes; greeting card art for Harold's Book Publishing; he also did oriental, brush-work style; he won honorable mention....." (I have corrected some spelling errors). Apparently, Burns also worked for a time as a Disney artist. He was born in Riverside, CA and died in Watsonville, near Monterey.
This painting has a stubbed upper left corner, soiling, and other minor flaws associated with age. Written on the back by the artist: "Original by Harvey W. Burns/"THE REMAINING ONES", and nearby the original "$95.00" price and "now $35.00". Originally there must have been a frame too, now long separated. At some point the top and right extreme edges were slightly cut down a bit, maybe to fit that prior frame.
