A rare original drawing, dated January 1849, titled in margin at lower center "Jackall Hunting in India", by listed England-born Australian 19th century artist HENRY GILBERT-JONES (1804-1888). The watercolor measures 13 1/2" by 19 1/2" (18 1/4" by 26" in lemon-gold frame). This appears at first like a classic traditional sporting art print of fox hunting, but closer examination reveals it is in fact a highly detailed early watercolor and ink drawing. Henry Gilbert-Jones was born in either England or Wales (conflicting information) and was apparently a traveler, seeing as that he was in North America by 1836. Not long thereafter we find him in Australia, where in the early 1840's he was creating etchings of scenes in Melbourne. The works of the artist are apparently very scarce indeed, as there are few auction records. We can see by the trail he left that Gilbert-Jones was quite the traveler, considering the effort travel required 180 years ago. This drawing is in excellent condition. Allow for some reflections in the glass.
