An original etching made on a zinc plate, 5 3/4" by 6 1/2" inside the present mat (14 1/4" by 18 1/2" in simple black frame), signed in pencil at lower right margin by important 19th century Italian artist GIOVANNI FATTORI (1825-1908). The title of the print is "Strada dei dintorni Fiorentini". Affixed to the backing is a charming old,early 20th century note handwritten in English. It reads (my best interpretation of the difficult to read handwriting) "by one of our best artists Giovanni Fattori 82 years old. This acqua forte are now accepted by the Gallery degli Uffizi and are to be placed in the gallery side by side of those or Rembrandt!! he told me this himself and is very proud of it. I hope you will like it. some day it will be very precious know if I shall have some good news to send him but all is so very uncertain I can only hope. Love to Papi Mamma & you all from your affectionate aunt Minne & much ( ) I send you this acqua forte ( ). This sounds as if the writer was a personal friend of the artist. Fattori's paintings have exceeded $500,000 at auction and many sell into six figures. He was born in Livorno. Fattori became one of the founders of the "macchiaoli" group, painters who were impressionist forerunners. The artist is best known for his scenes of military life and history, though later he absorbed the lessons of Barbizon and began to paint en plein air rural scenes. It was after 1884 that Fattori turned to etching. This work therefore likely dates to the period 1884 through 1907. Condition is good with some light foxing and creasing in the margins, and a tiny bit of rust in the plate mark edge. Some of Fattori's more important etchings have exceeded $5,000 at auction the auction record mostly in Italy suggests that HAND SIGNED pieces such as this one are rare and desirable.
