Accomplished drawing of a young mother holding her baby, painted and with pencil underneath, unsigned, but on the reverse is a printed label of the Kherwadi Social Welfare Association of Mumbai, India, giving the name of the artist as Savita Shershing Ashiwal, age 9 years. The work being so advanced, it is difficult to believe that it could have been created by a young child. Most certainly the style resembles that of some very well-known Indian artists, including Maqbool Fida Husain and Jamini Roy. The Kherwadi Social Welfare Association, according to a Wikipedia listing, is a non-profit organization which since 1928 has helped underprivileged youth in India to advance in life and become self-sustaining, productive members of society. The piece measures 16 1/2" by 13" inside the mat and 25" by 21" in dark imitation wood frame. An internet search did not reveal information on the young talented artist. Condition is excellent.
