An early 20th century watercolor painting of small structures on a coastline, likely Maine, but most certainly New England, signed at lower left corner by listed English-born, American artist SIDNEY THOMAS CALLOWHILL (1867-1939). Callowhill was born in Worcester, England and was in America by 1885. He worked at the Faience Manufacturing Company for a time, ultimately living for periods in Brooklyn, Baltimore and Boston. An artist, illustrator designer, he is best known today for his decorating skills on porcelain, the career peaking in the 1920's. Callowhill exhibited from 1897 through 1927 at the Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston, and a solo exhibition took place in New York at the Society of Arts and Crafts there, in 1925. The present watercolor measures 15 1/2" by 19" (22 1/2" by 26 1/2" framed). There is considerable foxing in the sky, as shown (particularly in the upper left quadrant of the painting), and the old discolored mat and old backing should be replaced with modern materials.
