This is a large 20" by 29" watercolor (32 1/2" by 40 1/2" framed) of a 1940's style wood motorboat, the "Aurora" of Glass Island, on a lake or inlet, a number of period figures enjoying the ride, the Canadian Maple Leaf flag at the stern, signed at lower right and dated there Oct. 1985 by the noted Maine-born artist BILL JEWELL (1954-). The painting is meticulously worked by an artist who held artist illustrator Maxfield Parrish in high regard, and indeed the tight, detailed style does reflect that artist's technique in a way. Jewell was born in Bangor, Maine and is still well known and exhibited in the Portland area, but over the years he has also explored the country from coast to coast, painting in California, Iowa, and elsewhere. He was trained in geology and pharmacy, and the geology training led him to an interest in grinding his own pigments from natural rock and soil sources. Jewell's works are held in a number of corporate collections, including those of L.L. Bean and UNUM Insurance. This painting is in excellent condition. I saw a retail online gallery offering Jewell's work above $5,000. This would make for a most impressive addition to your Adirondack-style lake or mountain cabin or second home.
