A color lithograph print, circa 1930 I believe, pencil signed at lower left margin and with printed signature in the margin at right, by the noted Israeli artist ABEL PANN (1883-1963). The subject is a group of primitively-dressed people near a knoll by a body of water surrounded by trees and hills; the central figure seems to be playing a lute in this poetic, Arcadian place. The print may possibly be from the artist's "Bible" series of 1930. Pann was born in Latvia or Belarus. He studied with Yehuda Pen of Vitebsk, who also taught Marc Chagall. At age 15 the young man studied in Odessa at he Academy of Fine Arts. In these early days he was for a time a sign painter in Russia and Poland. In 1903 Pann was in Kishinev (today's Moldova) and that same year landed in Paris, renting a room in a building where such figures as Modigliani, Chagall and Soutine lived. Pann was invited to the Bezalel Academy in Palestine in 1912. It would have been around this time that he decided that Jerusalem would be his home. The scenes of the Holy Land proved inspiring, and his art matured and became distinctive. During World War I, trapped in Europe by the conflict, he concentrated on drawings of the suffering of eastern European Jewish communities affected by the fighting. In subsequent years Pann chronicled in his art Jewish history and traditions. Working in oil and in pastel, he created an impressive body of work. The year 1924 saw him purchase a lithographic press. It would have been after this year that the present print was created. The influence of Art Nouveau and Symbolism movement is clearly visible in the imagery. Late works by Pann deal with Holocaust subjects. Works (particularly the drawings) have exceeded $50,000 at major auctions of Judaica and Jewish art. Condition of the print appears to be excellent (no examined out of the frame). Measurements are 11 1/2" by 9 1/4" (14" by 12" framed). Allow for a few reflections in glass.
