A finely detailed 1844 watercolor painting of an extensive German landscape, with fascinating details including numerous tiny figures fishing and admiring the river and its cascades, a mountaintop castle, church, and countless trees. The sheet measures 15" by 19", the drawing inside squared lines 11 1/4" by 16 3/4". In the lower margin is a lot of writing, some of it tiny. At left we see "Rastadt den 2en Oktober 1844"; at right we see "A. F. Waizenegger lieut. fecit" (apparently, the artist); below that, larger, "Seiner Hochwohlgebohren aus wahrer Hochachtung"; and "Herrn Hauptmann Bresste gewidmet von "; and finally at extreme lower right edge, again the name "A. F. Waizenegger lieutenant bei dem" (the rest cut off at the paper edge). The artist it seems was a military man, perhaps passing some extra time 175 years ago with a sheet of paper and some watercolors. His work has outlived him by many years. This was acquired from a German-American family in Southern California who had brought quite a bit of family art from the old country. The delicate work is a bit difficult to photograph as the detail is so difficult to capture. This has a broken-down oak frame but is sold essentially unframed.
