This is a fine drawing on heavy paper, the subject a young woman, in mixed media including pencil, red chalk, wash, and some white gouache for highlights, signed at lower right only with conjoined initials that could be "TH" or some variant of that. Below her portrait is a sensitively rendered pencil sketch of a hand and forearm, beautifully drawn. This could I suppose be of European origin but there is really little to go on, other than a framer's stamp on the backing paper from Carmel, California, and a 1989 date of framing. The work is very artistic, reminding a little of Leonardo da Vinci's sketches of the Medici, and of anatomy. The drawing is in excellent condition; I note just a slight ripple to the paper as seen at right edge. There might be a slight preservative spray over the drawing, giving the surface a slight gloss. Measurements of the sheet are 15" by 11", and 23" by 17 3/4" as framed.
