Tinted color appearance photograph of West Gate, Garden of the Gods, Colorado, by the noted William Henry Jackson (April 4, 1843 – June 30, 1942), an American painter, Civil War veteran, geological survey photographer and explorer, famous for his images of the American West. The work measures 4 1/4" by 7 1/4" (11 1/4" by 14 1/4" framed). I am not a specialist in photographica of the American West, but from research this appears to be what is called a "photochrom" of a black and white image originally taken by Jackson in the 1880's. Some time after 1897, a proprietary lithographic process was invented using the black and white images, with subsequent application of color, via lithographic blocks. This appears to be one of those works. The photo is mounted to a larger card on which is printed "THE W.H. JACKSON CO. / DENVER, COLO." The photo itself is in pretty good shape overall, with some light foxing at lower left, curling of the paper at upper right corner, and a few other edge irregularities; though, the mat is heavily water stained at bottom. This could however be completely matted out, so just the text and photo would be visible. Jackson's some 4,000 photos are viewable on the Denver Public Library site. See much more on his contribution to photographic documentation of the American West (and other parts of the nation, as well). He died at age 99, considered one of the last living Civil War veterans.
