Original Harper's Weekly large wood engraving "ON THE WAY TO THE DIGGINGS---HALT IN A ROUGH PASS IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS", May 1, 1875, signed in the print by noted artists JULES TAVERNIER (1844-1889) and PAUL FRENZENY (1840-1902). The print is generally clean and fresh considering the advanced age, with the typical center fold and just a barely noticeable 1 1/2" vertical tear extending into the image at bottom center. The artists were employed by Harper's to travel across the continent, sketching what they saw for eventual publication to an audience hungry for information about the American West. Tavernier was born in Paris to English and French parentage. After living in both England and France he was illustrating for a time in London, before leaving for America. There he became an artist who traveled the country, especially the western portion. Eventually he ended up in Hawaii, where he became known for his dramatic paintings of the erupting volcanoes. Paul Frenzeny was also born in France, serving in Mexico during the Mexican affair in the 1860's. He joined Tavernier on the Harper's project. Like Tavernier, Frenzeny painted much of the American West. This measures 22 1/2" by 28 1/4" as nicely framed in black.
