This is a very fine, classical early drawing, 5 1/8" by 8 5/8" (12" by 15 3/4" in attractive ornate gold leaf frame), not dated but likely dating to the 1830's through 1850 or so, signed at lower center by the artist "Loisel". The drawing, executed in pen, watercolor, and gum arabic highlighting in the trees and the low bank in center, is in excellent fresh condition, belying its age. The landscape depicted appears to be in Italy, where Loisel traveled extensively, there being known drawings from Florence to Sicily. Other known works are mostly landscapes in France and Italy, executed in both oil and watercolor. Loisel's biography seems to be very abbreviated. He was born in Neuilly, a suburb of Paris on the Seine, and evidently traveled extensively in southern France and the Italian peninsula. The frame is very attractive, though there has been some crumbling at lower left, a repair with white glue having occurred at some time in the past. Overall with the clean mat, this work is ready for the wall of your traditional interior.
