A colorful and rare painting of the beloved La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires, by the important Argentine artist VICENTE FORTE (1912-1980). The oil on canvasboard painting is signed at lower right where it is dated 1949. Measurements (unframed) are 43 cm. by 54 cm. (17" by 21"). Written on the reverse is "Vicente Forte/Pintor Argentino/Oleo sobre carton/Caserios verdes (Boca). Forte was born near Buenos Aires, where by 1935 he had received an art education at the Escuela de Bellas Artes. Study with the great master Emilio Pettoruti and Lino Enea Spilimbergo followed. By the late 1930's and well into the 1940's he painted with an avant garde group that explored Surrealism. Through the 1940's and into the 1950's, Forte's reputation and recognition surged both domestically and internationally. He exhibited widely within Argentina but also in Brazil, Chile, the USA, and even India. Winner of many prizes in the 1950's, he was invited to the Venice Biennale. Paintings of still life, and boats, in a distinctly modern style, became his best known works, though he also worked in tempera, in printmaking and in sculpture. Larger works have exceeded $15,000 at auction in the USA and Argentina. This piece is in generally good condition but there are a few edge losses, the board is somewhat warped (concave), and it appears that perhaps the very top of the board may (possibly) have been cut, perhaps to fit a past frame.
