A fine example of one of the 58 images from the famous "Miserere" series of prints by famous French artist GEORGES ROUAULT (1871-1958), this being plate number 3, "Toujours Flagelle" ("Forever Scourged"), dated 1922, printed in 1927 in an edition of 425, and finally actually published after the war in 1948. The series is described by many, in many ways; most mention that Rouault was one of the most important religious artists of the 20th century, and that this landmark series of prints, created as a labor of love from about 1916 to 1927, is a masterful interpretation of religion, war, human suffering, the suffering of Christ, redemption/salvation, man's cruelty to man, and other profound topics that confront humanity. Rouault was apprenticed to a stained glass maker while young and the impact of that training is obvious in his oeuvre. Rouault also studied with Gustave Moreau, whose biblical mythology figures influenced the young artist. Ambroise Vollard commissioned Rouault to create this series, spawned by the ravages of World War I. The sheet measures 25 1/2" by 19 1/2" (the image, 19" by 14 1/2"). Condition is excellent. There are old typed and handwritten notes on the backing as shown. Allow for reflections in a few images.
