An example of the etching "The Complete Angler", by the noted English artist credited with creating the so-called "Etching Revival" of the latter 19th century, FRANCIS SEYMOUR-HADEN (1818-1910). The print is signed in the plate and lower right and dated there 1877, but was likely printed in the year 1880, in an edition of 1000. Measurements are 6 1/2" by 8 3/4" inside the present mat and 12 1/2" by 14 3/4" as framed. The artist was interested from youth in the prints of the great masters of the past, and he studied them with scholarly interest. Marrying James McNeil Whistler's half-sister, he became friendly with Whistler and for a time collaborated with him on some art-related projects. Haden is credited with reviving interest in etchings, and to that end he founded the Society of Painter-Etchers, predecessor of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers. A noted Rembrandt collector and scholar in his day, significantly he is credited with having created the first chronological catalog raisonne of Rembrandt's etchings, including their various states. This print appears to be in excellent condition (not examined out of frame).
