A very well executed oil on canvas coastal landscape painting, square shape at 23 1/4" by 23 1/4" (28 3/4" by 28 3/4" in cream-color laminated framing), the scene a traditional picturesque small fishing craft of Southeast Asian waters, with several figures and distant craft loosely suggested, the work signed at lower right with what appears as "Sobinto". There being no artist by this name I have explored online the other possibilities. The Filipino artist Edgardo Sarmiento signed somewhat similarly but the work does not really resemble his typical work. I had leaned towards this being from Indonesia and it may well still be but the Philippines remains a possibility. Regardless, the work is by a trained hand, the flickering impressionist brush strokes and application of color very well handled. Condition is excellent with the exception of an area of light abrasion in the sky at top center, and a small similar area at top right corner. You could well hang the work without addressing this but if you decided to repair it, the cost should not be excessive. All in all this is a lovely work of Southeast Asia.
