An elegantly understated print featuring spindly trees in a strangely empty landscape with one small structure, signed in pencil at lower right corner and numbered 146/260 at lower left, by the noted American contemporary artist ROBERT KIPNISS (1931-). Kipniss is known for his graphic art and for his paintings, which have gone into five figures at auction. He was born in Brooklyn and was taking art classes at the Art Students League as early as 1947. In the late forties he studied at Wittenberg University and eventually was at the University of Iowa. The askart description of the artist: "....monochromatic stylized vistas with natural and architectural elements intended to evoke an elegiac nearly surrealistic mood in haunting, silent landscapes....". Kipniss' lithograph and mezzotint prints are highly sought after by collectors of fine prints. He was technically very skilled; works include mezzotint (after about 1990) and intaglio processes. There is a catalogue raisonne of the graphic works. This example is clean, with linen mat and stylish silvery metal frame. It measures 15" by 11" inside the mat and 22" by 18" framed. One of four examples by the artist in my shop. See an excellent and complete biography of the artist on Wikipedia, which describes how scenes he sketched in central Ohio, in his youth, affected his imagery. Allow for reflections at top left in some images. The print is behind Plexiglas, for safe and easier shipping.
