A very nicely executed work, oil on canvasboard, 9" by 12", unframed, the scene several modest wood cabins in the Old South, with several figures completing the scene, including two in the foreground working a cotton field, in the autumn of the year. The work is signed at lower left "Edith Alewine" and dated there 1990. This is a "self-taught" sort of painting by a talented artist about which there seems to be little to no information. An online search turned up several of her paintings in a sale held in Louisville, Mississippi (northeastern part of the state); and there is a death listing for an Edith Richardson Alewine (1916-2005) from that same town. In any event, the artist has taken a bit from William Aiken Walker and Grandma Moses to make a charming painting. See a second painting by the artist in my shop.
