India ink on card drawing of a Spanish-California style home, the card 8" by 13 1/2", (plus surrounding simple mat, no glass/frame, hinged at top edge inside the mat), signed on reverse and dated mid-1922, by listed artist CHARLES VOORHIES (1901-1970). Note the 1922 rubber stamps on the back showing this was created at the University of California Architectural Dept., (Berkeley), in that year, while the artist was just a student. Voorhies was born in Portland, Oregon. He studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and UC Berkeley, and painting at the California School of Fine Arts, under Maurice Sterne. Voorhies spent most of his life in Portland, with exceptions for European travel and periods of study in the San Francisco Bay area. Interestingly, for three months in 1930 (after he created this drawing) Voorhies assisted Diego Rivera on the famous mural at the downtown San Francisco Stock Exchange building. From 1939-57 he taught at the Portland Museum Art School. He passed away in Portland on March 30, 1970. Voorhies exhibited in Portland and San Francisco. The drawing is in excellent condition, needing perhaps a fresh mat, and a suitable frame. The drawing is quite elegant and would make a fine addition to a Spanish style home. The drawing came from an old San Francisco collection.
