An impressive oil on canvas laid on panel landscape painting, 31 1/2" by 48 1/2" in thin strip framing, signed at lower left and dated 1993 by the noted Indian environmentalist, wildlife photographer, naturalist and writer-poet, MADHAVIAH KRISHNAN (1912-1993). Extensive biographies and tributes to this prominent citizen of 20th century India are available online. He is considered a pioneering wildlife photographer (in black and white), a keen, unrivaled observer of the natural riches of the Indian subcontinent, and commentator on that natural environment. Krishnan wrote a column from 1950 through his death. It is less well known that he was also an accomplished artist, with the apparently few surviving works featuring landscape, sometimes populated with animals, painted in an ethereal, impressionistic style, the colors subtle, almost monochromatic, as seen in this example. Condition is excellent, with just a very few small abrasions. An original label from Mumbai remains on the reverse side of the panel, as shown. A handful of Krishnan's works have sold at auctions in India and Southeast Asia.
