Watercolor on paper, signed at lower right with the distinctive signature of California artist EMIL KOSA, JR. (1903-1968). The work is not dated but likely would have been created in the 1950's or 1960's. Kosa was a prominent member of the California Scene artists. Born in Paris to a Czech father who was also an artist, Emil Jr. received art training in Prague and subsequently in Los Angeles and Paris in the late 1920's, studying with Pierre Laurens and Frantisek Kupka. Early in his career, back in Los Angeles, he painted murals and other decorations for architects and interior designers. By 1933 Kosa was already working for 20th Century Fox, creating special effects, which eventually won him a 1964 Oscar. A prolific artist, Kosa created oils, and many drawings in charcoal and in watercolor. Drawings of nudes are most commonly seen; highly finished landscape works are less often encountered. Kosa is known for his California landscapes and urban scenes, some of which go well into five figures at auctions. The present work measures 21" by 29" (slightly larger as framed).
