A fine example of the work of famous Mexican artist "CHUCHO" JESUS REYES FERREIRA (1882-1977), measuring 29" by 19" (36" by 26" in a circa mid-century frame with liner). This is an outstanding example of the work of this noted self-taught artist, created in a mix of gouache and oil and metallic gold paint on his delicate, typical crepe paper/tissue paper. The artist was born in Guadalajara in the later 19th century and achieved the age of 96 before passing in Mexico City. In the years between he led a most interesting life. His father as far back as 1911 left a house full of Mexican colonial art, folk art, antiques, and artifacts. This early exposure was built upon by the artist, who continued in a business selling these objects to an appreciative public. Originally he wrapped the objects in the crepe paper decorated by him by hand, but ultimately the drawings thereon proved so popular that Reyes Ferreira created them for their own sake. By the 1940's he was exhibiting them. Over the years, he became friendly with or met the likes of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Andre Breton, Juan Soriano, Raul Anguiano; Chagall called him "the Mexican Chagall" and Picasso was aware of the artist's work, making favorable comments. See the full biography online. Today Reyes-Ferreira's works sell at auction in Mexico, the United States and elsewhere. While his subject matter often includes still life, figures, animals such as lions and horses, his roosters appear to be among the most desired subjects. This work being on the typical exceedingly delicate crepe tissue paper, it will be removed from frame and properly supported, for shipping. Local buyers are welcome to pick it up as framed.
