An impressive large drawing of a clown, 28" by 22" (34" by 28" framed), signed at lower left, not dated, by important American artist ROBERT REMSEN VICKREY (1926-2011). The image is drawn meticulously with a fine hand, in reddish brown ink on creamy paper. Vickrey is known for his so-called "Magic Realism" work--a combination of Surrealism and Realism. Born in New York City, he studied at Yale, and in the late 1940's at the Art Students League under Reginald Marsh and Kenneth Hayes Miller. With a Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Yale in 1950, he launched into commercial work, creating many of the Time Magazine covers at mid century. Later in life Vickrey wrote two books, one on the egg tempera medium in which he excelled, and one on his life and work. That work has been compared to that of Andrew Wyeth, Jared French, and Paul Cadmus. Condition is excellent; a blotch of watercolor at lower left appears to date to the creation of the work. Frame is of heavy wood. There is slight chipping to the gold accent edging. The work probably dates to the 1960's or 1970's.
