A PAIR of very desirable prints in unusually fine condition, (not examined out of frame, but appearance as presented is superb), pencil signed at lower right near the red artist seal, by the important French-Japanese printmaker artist PAUL JACOULET (1902-1960). Measurements inside the mat are 15" by 11 1/4" (23" by 16 1/4" in black strip frames). Note the prevalent silver mica in the field background, one of the revolutionary techniques for which Jacoulet is revered among print collectors. The prints date to 1950 and are known as "Les Deux Adversaires" ("The Two Adversaries"---cockfight chickens), and "Droite" and "Gauche" (left and right) refer to the left-and-right facing prints. The edition may be 250 examples. Jacoulet was born in Paris but lived in Japan most of his life, creating prints in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is one of the very few western artists who mastered woodblock sufficiently well to have become recognized in Japan. The likes of General MacArthur, Greta Garbo, Pope Pius XII and Queen Elizabeth II were/are all said to be avid collectors of Jacoulet's works. The artist was an ardent self-promoter, and a flamboyant gay man who was denied official entry into the United States because of his sexual orientation. See the net for much, much more on this highly popular artist and his prints. Frames are in excellent condition.
