After an original painting by the famed Surrealist Belgian-born master artist Rene Magritte (1898-1967), is this print, 1970's, titled "L'Ile au Tresor" ("Treasure Island"), numbered in margin at lower left 199/200 and pencil signed there by Georgette Magritte (1901-1986), the artist's wife of many years; stamped ink Magritte signature at lower right. Measurements are 18 1/2" by 24" inside the mat and 26" by 31" as framed. The dream-like imagery, of green shoots emerging from reddish soil patch, in the shape of birds, is typical of the fantastic visual treats created by Magritte's imagination. The piece is in exceptionally fresh condition, as found; so fresh that I have elected to keep the protective wrappings on the frame. The colors are exceptional and the paper white. Magritte's original works have gone to exceptional highs at auction in recent years, his popularity with art lovers seemingly increasing. The limited edition prints authorized by Georgette after Magritte's death from pancreatic cancer in 1967 are likely about as close as most of the general public will come to any association with the artists' works. The long and interesting relationship of Rene and Georgette, with many ups and downs over decades, is well documented on the net.
