Very rare lower Paleolithic proto hand axe. Jasper, height 3 7/8". Fontmaure, France, legal surface find. Excellent condition. Very summarily executed proto axe, using hard hammer percussion. While the distal end was to some degree refined, there is no evidence of the edges having been further fashioned into workable tool edges. This particular lithic doesn't fit neatly into any category (as defined by Debeneth and Dibbles in the Handbook of Paleolithic Typology), though by form and apparent design and function is could loosely be categorized as a pic. Fascinating object. Dates to approximately 120,000-80,000 BCE.
