Interesting pair of Neanderthal multi-tools from Fontmaure, France. Jasper, heights both at 3 3/4". Legal surface finds, the lithic on the right has a couple of very minor chips missing. Both of these tools are of unusual structure and typology. The lithic on the left is primarily a burin on a large flake. The flake side is comprised of a large area of cortex or softer jasper. There is an interesting concave scraper edge to this tool as well. The tool on the right is a nosed end scraper with a concave side scraper and a saw-like face on a large irregular levallois flake. A small area of the striking platform remains, though this was retouched to make the piece more ergonomically stable. Dating to 80,000-50,000 BCE.
