Small Neanderthal biface with area of cortex. Flint, height 3 5/8". Vallee de la Creuse, France, legal surface find. One old chip missing, visible on the inside edges in the photos, about 1/4 down from the distal end. Lovely, glossy ground patina. Though similar in shape to a Limande, this lithic is a bit more roughly flaked and is thick for its size, making it a substantial tool for heavier work. Excellent ergonomics indicate this as the piece is designed for a very strong grip in all directions. A summary work that displays a conceptual mastery of toolmaking. 80,000-50,000 BCE.
