Fascinating and highly unusual tool. This is a lower paleolithic (probably Heidelberg Man) levallois core that was, thousands of years later, refashioned and recycled into a complex multi-tool by a Neanderthal tool maker. Bean ore jasper, height 2 3/4". Legal surface find, Bavaria, Germany. Excellent condition with fine ground patina. Note the difference in color on the core surface and the retouches from the middle paleolithic era. Dating this is complex. Neanderthal retouches date to approximately 80,000-50,000 BCE. Core probably 350,000 BCE.
