Beautiful example of a mode 1 pebble chopper. Bean ore jasper, excellent condition. Height 2 1/2". Legal surface find from the region of the confluence of the Wornitz and Rhine rivers, Germany. Dark semi-glossy ground patina. Hard hammer percussion technique. This is probably by Homo Erectus. Currently there is a debate as to whether or not what we consider Homo Erectus was a single hominid species, or perhaps two (Homo Antecessor being the other). Definitely not a Neanderthal tool. A lovely, sculptural example of this type of lithic. Dates to 450,000-300,000 BCE.
