Lower Paleolithic chopping tool, Heidelberg Man, from Grand Pressigny, France. Flint, height 5". Legal surface find in excellent condition. Exceptional, glass-like ground patina. Interesting, hefty tool with good evidence of use as a chopper along two of the edges. This is a partial biface lithic, hard hammer percussion, with a good area of cortex remaining on one side. A very early example of a Mode 2 (Acheulean) tool. Dates to 605,000-350,000 BCE.
