This porcelain plate was produced in England by Mintons in 1883. The date cipher indicates this year. The plate was produced especially for Tiffany of New York. The painting is attributed to Henry Mitchell, a Minton artist specializing in painting dogs and wildlife. The plate measures 9 ½ inches in diameter. The central focus is the nearly photographic quality painting of a sleeping hound dog on a fur rug. Objects in the background come to life with colors and textures. The surrounding surface of the plate is painted in heavy enamels in the style of Christopher Dresser. The flowers on the celeste blue ground are a dazzling array of color and design. All of the design is outlined in gold. You cannot find a more wonderful combination of design elements on one plate. No wonder it was made for Tiffany.
