This porcelain tea cup and saucer was produced in France by a Paris decorator in the 1870s or earlier. It has a hand painted monogram “AJ” hand painted in gold. The saucer is 5 1/2 inches in diameter. The cup is 2 inches tall with a diameter of 3 1/4 inches. The porcelain it thin and translucent. The cup has a hand painted scene that surrounds the entire surface. An 18th century couple, of noble birth, are holding hands and reading a letter. The painting is soft and dream-like. The surroundings are a wooded landscape opening up to a stream. The saucer has paintings of objects and ornaments, symbolic in nature. One side, a quiver of arrows possibly cupid’s, a nest of eggs, a dove and flowers represent the blossoming love. The other side has an instrument, lute or mandolin, pages of love letters, a harp and tambourine. These objects were used in the pursuit of the loved one. There is delicate gold trim on the rims and handle. This is art, produced by a highly skilled and talented artist. Condition: Excellent, without defects of any kind.
