The image of the 'Cadejo'-- stems from a folkloric myth (unique to Nicaragua). The 'Cadejo' appears in times of distress and crisis-- and helps for example, the wayward get home and helps the injured to get prompt care and assistance. For many Nicaraguans, the 'Cadejo' is a deeply felt presence. Efren Medina has been depicting the image of the 'Cadejo' for over two decades.
Other noted Nicaraguan painters include: Armando Morales, Alejandro Arostegui, June Beer, Manuel Garcia, Arnoldo Guillen, Genaro Lugo, Carlos Montenegro, David Ocon, Roger Perez de la Rocha, Leoncio Saenz, Orlando Sobalvarro, Luis Urbina and Leonel Vanegas
