14 karat yellow gold hinged locket, the front inset with a triple overlay red, white & blue opaque glass plaque and the back featuring a solid dark ruby red translucent glass plaque. The colors and quality of the glass supports an attribution to Baccarat. With its use of the colors of France's tricolor flag, it's certainly possible that this piece was made to commemorate some important historical event or to symbolize patriotic sentiments. The bale is signed with what appears to be "Boule F & C" (the letters are extremely tiny, so I can't guarantee that I've correctly read the mark).
Origin: France, ca. 1850. Size: 1" x 13/16". Condition: Excellent.
