Stunning Victorian 18K gold cameo brooch featuring a male portrait carved from angelskin coral. Male cameos are very rare and usually depict either gods from the Classical pantheon or historical figures. This example is very similar to the Van Dyck portraits of King Charles II. The details of the lace collar, heavy neck chain, ruffled shirt, beard and hair are extraordinary. The cameo is very deeply carved with the white figure standing out beautifully against the soft pink background. The cameo is set in a simple gold setting enhanced only with a narrow line of wire-twist decoration. Tested and guaranteed 18K gold.
Origin: cameo probably Italy; setting probably American, ca. 1850. Condition: excellent, no damage to cameo, the clasp is a replacement. Size: 2-1/32” x 1-13/16” x 5/8”.
