A nice Victorian shell cameo depicting Aurora, goddess of the Dawn. Dressed in classical robes, the goddess has a pair of wings entwined in her hair (this attribute can also be representative of Psyche, but her wings are usually shaped like those of a butterfly). The detailing of the carving is very nice. The cameo is surrounded by a very handsome Etruscan setting decorated with millegraining and beadwork. The back of the frame retains the original extended pinstem and swivel bale; the c-clasp is an old replacement. Tested and guaranteed 14K gold.
Ca. 1870. Condition: excellent, no damage, all original except c-clasp. Size: 1-11/16” x 1-5/16”.
