A gorgeous Imperial Austrian 18K yellow gold brooch set with a reverse-carved Essex crystal depicting a pansy. Essex crystals were very popular for depicting horses, dogs and various hunting themes, but were not often used with floral motifs. This example is nicely carved and painted. The crystal is set in a simple ropetwist frame. The back retains the original extended pinstem and c-clasp. The clasp is marked with Austrian hallmarks used toward the end of the Imperial era. Essex crystals are more common in English and American jewelry than in Continental European pieces.
Origin: Austria, ca. 1900. Condition: excellent. Size: 7/8” diameter. Weight: 4.5 grams.
