This is an authentic antique sword chest /cabinet called Katana Tansu that dates from the Early Meiji period (1870's-1880's). It was constructed entirely from Paulownia (Kirinoki) wood. The dimensions are 13.25 inches tall , 47.5 inches wide and 14.5 inches deep.
Katana Tansu were specialty chests with several long drawers used for the storage of sword blades and sword fittings. They were used primarily by blade polishers . Most often the case wood of choice was Paulownia to help protect the blades from oxidization in the humid summer months. As well, the light weight of the wood made it easier to move this chest between samurai customers.
