This is an authentic antique Japanese merchant chest called Choba Tansu that measures 67.13" high by 36.25" wide by 15.25" deep. . It was made using Cypress (Hinoki) and Cryptomeria (Suginoki) woods and its age is from the 1880's to 1890's (mid Meiji era).
The Choba Tansu was used by merchants and was traditionally displayed prominently in shops to impress customers.
