This is an exceptionally rare 'Higashi Kogin sashi' jacket, noragi from Aomori, Japan. In the northern district of Japan, it was impossible to grow cotton because of the cool climate. For the common people, farmers and fisher folk wore hemp clothing. Because hemp clothing is not warm enough they added sashiko stitches for more warmth. The added geometric pattern of cotton stitches is referred to as 'Kogin'. Circa: Meiji Era (1868-1912) Museum quality piece for true connoisseurs or collectors. Excellent antique condition. Please see photos for minor age marks, small repairs and slight stains. The design is one of a typical Aomori or Tsugaru kimono like jacket see the publication: Kyoto Shoin's Art Library of Japanese Textiles, Volume 13, Page 9 &10 'Kogin and Sashiko Stitch' Shoulder to hem 40 inches or 102 cm Side seam to side seam 24 inches or 62 cm Edge of sleeve to edge of sleeve 45 inches or 115 cm WE DO NOT ACCEPT RETURNS.
