Theodore Gerard, Gand, Belgian, 1829-1902. This detailed and delightful genre painting is oil on canvas. It is in good condition and is signed lower left and dated 1883, 22.5" by 30.5" in the handsome original 19th C frame 29" by 37". Gerard studied at the Gand Ecole des Beaux Arts and moved to Brussels. He was awarded medals in Brussels, Vienna, Philadelphia, London and Dunkerque. He was known for Genre paintings: village feasts and anecdotes of family life in the country painted with clear tones with a freshness of composition and a spontenaity in rendering the personalities of his subjects. His work is in Museums: Anvers, Brussels, Souabe, Courtra, Gand and is listed in Benezit as well as Les Petits Maitre de la 1820-1926. His paintings sell for up to $70,000.
