Gerry, Samuel Lancaster, Roxbury, MA, 1813-1891. This beautiful oil on canvas is a landscape with Southern Italian Roman aqueducts in the background and 19th century peasants and animals in the foreground. It is oval in shape and is signed and dated on the back. It has been relined and is in very nice condition. It is in a newer gold leaf frame that is 20" by 30 1/2" but with the original 19th century oval spandrel. Gerry lived in Europe and his more sought after paintings are those from Southern Italy. He is listed in Fieldings, Mallett, and Who Was Who in American Art. He was a Hudson River School painter, leader of "White Mountain School" and a cofounder of "Boston Art Club."
